Do’s & Don’ts of Finding a LGBTQ+ Wedding Officiant in Georgia



Planning a wedding in Georgia as an LGBTQ+ couple comes with unique considerations — especially when choosing an officiant. While same-sex marriage is legal nationwide, not every officiant in Georgia is affirming in practice, even if they are legally allowed to perform your ceremony.

Here are some important do’s and don’ts to help you find an officiant who will truly honor your love, identity, and chosen family.


DO: look for explicitly LGBTQ+ affirming language

·       LGBTQ+ Affirming

·       Same-sex weddings welcome

·       Inclusive or gender-affirming ceremonies

·       Pronouns respected

*** If their website or profile avoids mentioning LGBTQ+ couples directly, it’s okay to ask for clarity before booking.


DON’T: Assume legal ability equals affirmation

Georgia law allows many people to officiate weddings — but legal authority does not equal emotional or cultural safety.

Avoid officiants who:

  • Seem hesitant when discussing LGBTQ+ ceremonies

  • Use “traditional” as a default without discussion

  • Say things like “I don’t usually do these, but…”

Your wedding day is not the place to feel like an exception


DO: Ask about inclusive language & pronouns

Your wedding should reflect you, not outdated scripts

Ask:

·        Do you use non-gendered ceremony language?

·        Can we review the ceremony script beforehand?

·        How do you honor chosen pronouns and family?

An affirming Georgia officiant will welcome these conversations.


DON’T: Feel Pressured to Minimize your Identity

If an officiant suggests:

·        Keeping it “neutral.”

·        Avoiding certain language for family comfort

·        Removing identity-affirming elements

That’s a RED FLAG.  Your ceremony should feel joyful… not edited.


DO: Trust your Instincts

Whether you are getting married in Atlanta, North Georgia or a backyard ceremony at home, your officiant should make you feel:

·        Respected

·        Seen

·        Excited

If something feels off, keep looking.  The right officiant is out there.
